UNEVEN surfaces and soggy courts are a thing of the past at Romsey Tennis Club, with new courts and a grand reopening for all ages this Saturday.

“We are rapt, new nets, new poles, new synthetic courts, new everything,” President Brett Rees said.

Everyone is invited! The fun starts at 6pm with a BBQ, games, activities, a jumping castle and a ball machine, sure to be a hit.

Close to 30 teams compete in the Macedon Ranges Tennis Association including Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Macedon, Woodend, and Kyneton. When the Rees children took up tennis, the family quickly took on leadership roles, and ten patient years later three of the five ancient courts have had a facelift made possible with the club raising a whopping $50K.
Drainage concerns have been addressed by Macedon Ranges Shire who had new fences installed around the courts.

“We raised $50K of our own, and we got $20K from Bendigo Bank. Then we had Newnham Earthmoving come and rip it up and that saved us $50K,” Mr Rees said.

“The 1860 Romsey [Bistro] has supported us for 18 months with raffles, and they give us their cans and bottles which helped us to win the statewide can recycling competition in conjunction with Tennis Victoria.

“We are a small club, we have around 60 members, but we got the most cans and bottles in the state.”

In addition to the reopening, the club has Monday night cardio tennis, club merchandise and selling sponsorship spaces on their agenda. Another is a merger with the Pickleball club.

“It is an option if the back two courts are resurfaced with acrylic,” he said.
“We’d like to team up with them.”
