A LOCAL tennis club is set to reopen following flash flooding which destroyed their infrastructure and facilities.

The Darraweit Guim Tennis Club has been active since before 1940, and in October 2022 when Victorians in low lying areas were affected by excessive rainfall across short periods of time, the small town with a population of 402 was devastated.

Government funding has helped the small tennis club to restore fencing and revive their facilities with a newly furbished club room. There are also three new Plexi-paved court surfaces and one can also be used for netball and basketball games.

Next weekend the President of the Darraweit Guim Tennis Club (DTC) Henriette McDonald, hopes to recruit new members when they hold their re-opening celebration and registration day.

“Everyone is invited,” she said.

“There will be a free BBQ, and an ice cream van available for the community to enjoy.
“There will be a [tennis] coach on the day for pickleball, hotshots and cardio tennis, but BYO racquets and ball. We used to have them available but not since the floods.”

DTC Secretary Helen Callahan said it’s important for the community to revive their levels of pre-flood fitness and community.

“Members can use the courts at any time,” she said.
“The lights were destroyed in the floods, but they are on now.
“It’s also a welcome return for netball and basketball games.
“The newly furbished clubroom is available to hire for functions. There is a playground with public toilets nearby and plenty of parking.
“It’s good to know with shorter days coming, everyone can still take advantage of the courts.”
The re-opening celebration and registration day will be held on Saturday, March 16, between 12 pm and 4 pm.
