CRICKETERS in Melbourne’s north can look forward to honing their skills and smashing sixes at the new Hume Indoor Cricket Centre, backed by the State Government.
Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence joined Hume City Council Mayor, Councillor Jarrod Bell, Cricket Victoria, and Greenvale Kangaroos Cricket Club on February 7 to officially open the Centre at Greenvale Recreation Reserve, backed by $1.5 million from the State Government.
With Australia’s recent Border–Gavaskar Trophy test win against India and the return of the Women’s Ashes to the hallowed turf of the MCG, cricket is front and centre in the hearts and minds of Victorians right now.
The indoor centre means year-round opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to develop their skills through community and competitive programs, tournaments, and camps.
The venue will cater for the growing cricketing community in the local area by supporting players to take their batting, fielding, and bowling skills to the next level.
Ms Spence said the new facilities will provide more opportunities for cricketers.
“Cricket has always been one of the most loved sports in Australia and these new facilities mean players can get out with their friends and practice their skills all year round,” she said.
“We’re giving the local cricket community quality, modern facilities they can be proud of, and that foster the next generation of Victorian cricket stars.”
Member for Greenvale Iwan Walters said the new facility would be the envy of cricketers around the state.
“This is a major boost for our booming cricket community who now have world class facilities to enjoy playing the sport they love, closer to home,” he said.
Hume City Council contributed $9.4 million towards the purpose-built facility.
