Mernda is set to gain an exciting new sports facility.

Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell last week announced that the suburb was successful in receiving a $1.5 million investment for the construction of netball facilities, following an application put forward by the City of Whittlesea for the government’s $200 million Play Our Way Program.

Designed to remove barriers preventing women and girls from participating in sport and physical activity, the program’s grant will see eight outdoor netball courts, associated lighting, spectator seating, fencing, and coaches’ shelters constructed, delivering an essential piece of infrastructure for the community.

Mr Mitchell congratulated the City of Whittlesea for its successful application, and praised the program’s inclusive nature.

“Congratulations to the City of Whittlesea for its successful application for this grant,” he said.

“I am confident this will have a very positive effect for women and girls in our community.

“Every person has the right to enjoy sport, in their own way and at the level that suits them.

Local netballers will reap the benefits of the new sporting facility.

“Investing in sport facilities is a key part of ensuring that we create strong, active, and connected communities. By supporting local clubs and providing better facilities, we are not just improving sporting outcomes, but also promoting health, wellbeing, and community spirit.”

Minister for Sport Anika Wells echoed Mr Mitchell’s sentiments, highlighting that the number of applications—which exceeded 160—showcased the nation’s commitment to a fairer and more inclusive sporting industry.

“Play Our Way is all about creating greater opportunities for women and girls to have an equal chance to get the fun, satisfaction, and health benefits sport offers,” she said.

“The huge response to the grants, and the range of great project ideas, shows that Australian communities want to be more supportive of women and girls.”
