Local Kilmore resident Mick Galea was diagnosed with brain cancer around 20 months ago, and now close friends are organising a Charity Ride and Drive Day to raise funds for researchers to find him a cure.
Mr Galea is currently taking a trial drug to keep his condition stable, and his wife Nikkia and two young children are grateful for that vital brain cancer research.
Friends and work colleagues are organising the Charity Ride and Drive Day, and they have created a public event page on Facebook titled The Team LYVEN ride day drive day.
LYVEN is Mr Galea’s personalised licence plate number.
The Team LYVEN ride day drive day is two short weeks away, and everyone is welcome to tag along. Just bring your own wheels to the muster point at the Black Horse Hotel in Bulla from 9.30am.
The engines will idle until a 10am departure. In convoy style, everyone will drive or ride along the scenic route to Romsey, Wallan, Whittlesea, Flowerdale, Strath Creek, Broadford, and Kilmore, before stopping at The Magpie and Stump Hotel in Wandong around 1pm for lunch.
Organisers have arranged a silent auction and raffles with donations from supportive businesses. They expect the day to finish around 5pm and are asking for a $20 donation from participants.
All money will go towards the main event which is the Elders Point to Pinnacle and Brooks Point to Pub 2024 Marathon set for Sunday, November 17.
Ms Galea is training for the marathon event, and you can watch her progress and see the funds mount up from participating teams all over Australia via www.bit.ly/3zllzpH.
The event is organised by Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer foundation, and they have raised over $22 million since 2015 when Carrie Bickmore created the foundation after her husband Greg passed away in 2010 following a 10-year battle with brain cancer.
To make a donation, call Nikkia Galea on 0410 658 136. To register or donate for the Charity Ride and Drive Day, visit www.bit.ly/3zllzpH and enter Ride Day into the message section.
