Year 10 student Ava Schwebach recently completed work experience at the Review and her interest in journalism continues.
During the busy week at the Sydney Street office, Ava worked alongside the editorial team to process the next editions of the Whittlesea Review and the North Central Review.
In between, she interviewed school children and took photographs at community and sporting events.
Three of Ava’s stories were published in the next edition of the newspapers (24/09/24), including Whittlesea Community House unites, The signs of stroke, and Fishing fun.
Although there was no breaking news at the Review during her time, there was plenty of golf and darts to report on, and even the opportunity to be part of the weekly local news radio program with OKRFM presenter Mark Perrott.
Upon completing her secondary school education, Ava plans to go onto university to study for a Bachelor of Arts with a major in media communications.
Along with a good friend, Ava enjoys archery and card making, and travel and crime writing genres. Ava said she is more certain than ever that newspaper journalism is preferable to a newsroom journalism career.
Broadford Secondary College Work Experience Coordinator Deb Boyd has outlined a 2025 study path with Ava.
Currently, the school curriculum does not offer media studies, so they have organised remote learning with the Virtual School of Victoria (VSV), and Ava is comfortable with the alternative.
“I’m going to study though VSV. I think I know how it works because I think it’s by the same people I did a program with back in Year 7 or 8 … the Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) that I was invited to. I know how to submit work, to go on calls, and things like that,” she said.
“I want to do literature, but it’s been cancelled for Year 11s. So [we] have been asked to do a Year 12 version next year—I’ll be doing Year 12 Units 3 and 4 instead. I’ll do geography, food tech, and English and math.”
Look out for Halloween: Drawn together or dragged in? and Pet safe by AvaSchwebach in this week’s edition.
The Review would like to wish Ava all the best with her future endeavours.
