Wallan District Cricket Club’s quest to go one better this season lifts a fog from this Sunday morning with the commencement of pre-season training.
The Magpies will gather at their new-look Greenhill Reserve nets to start a campaign aimed at avenging their loss to Broadford in last season’s Johnstone Shield Grand Final.
Recently-inducted life member Steve Bell has been reappointed for a fifth season as coach, and is excited about coordinating the Club’s shot at redemption.
“Everyone is excited about the opportunity presented this season and we are determined to improve on last season’s results,” he said.
“We look like retaining the bulk of last year’s First XI team with classy batsman Nathan Fowler committing to return to the Club, and most of the young guys who have graduated from juniors at the Club to be key pillars of the senior team are again on board.
“First XI aside, our Seconds are coming off their best season in years, the Thirds are always in finals contention, and the Fourths continue to play a vital role in the Club.
“We will also be fielding a women’s team for the first time this season, so we are looking to build all facets of the Club, and I encourage any new players interested in having a hit to get along.”
Bell was not the only key reappointment ahead of the 2024/25 season, with Robbie Fowler also committing to a second term as President.
Sunday’s session runs from 10am-11.30am, with weekend sessions planned each week until the start of the season on October 5, while sessions at Legends Indoor Sports in Somerton have been planned for August 28, September 4, 18, and 25.
