Almost reaching the end of the Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL) season, teams across the district entered round 17 at the weekend, which saw mixed results.
Compared to earlier matches in the season, Lancefield had a promising start, taking the lead with six points against Wallan in the first quarter.
Both sides were motivated in the second quarter to claim the dominating position, which Wallan secured by the end of the second quarter with three points.
However, it was still anyone’s game at this point.
Resulting in Wallan’s favour, the side came firing in the third quarter, and pushed its margin to an 18-point lead.
The fourth quarter saw Wallan take the win, with 100-53, but it was still an outstanding performance from Lancefield, who almost experienced its first win in the last RDFNL round against Kyneton.
Assistant coach Spencer Mathieson said the Magpies were expecting a good performance from Lancefield.
“[Lancefield], they had a plan yesterday which they executed well, and it took us till the second half to get the game played our terms, where we defended a lot better when they had the footy. We had 17 scoring shots, and won the second half by 44 points,” he said.
“We play Kyneton away next week at Kyneton for the first time which is exciting.”
Down in Romsey, the Redbacks hosted Diggers Rest, who are currently above the side on the ladder.
It was not the most pleasant game day for the side, as Diggers were already onto a strong start, with a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
Diggers ran far with its lead for the rest of the match, ending with a 44-82 win.
Netball
After a hard loss in round 16, the Wallan netballers triumphed in round 17 against Lancefield.
Although the side ended the match on a high note, Lancefield showed up in competitive style, giving Wallan a contested match.
But the Magpies were not easy to scare, as the side were still controlling the tempo in each period, and concluded the match with a 47-35 win.
Elsewhere, the Redbacks excelled at their home ground after a huge third period against Diggers Rest, claiming a 66-42 win.
Last round of the regular season, in round 18, Wallan will travel to Kyneton, Romsey will play Macedon, while Lancefield will host Riddell this Saturday.
