Seymour Football Netball Club, SFNC, will welcome back 376-game AFL midfield powerhouse David Mundy for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League, GVL, season.

Mundy was recruited from Seymour as pick 19 in the 2003 AFL draft, enjoying an illustrious career as one of the competition’s top midfielders over two decades.

The 38-year-old will remain living in Perth but play enough games for Seymour to qualify for finals.

Among a range of achievements in his AFL career, Mundy is Fremantle’s all-time games record-holder. Only eight men have played more games in the history of the competition.

Mundy was All-Australian in 2015, won Fremantle’s best and fairest in 2010, and captained the club in 2016.

SFNC president Gerard O’Sullivan said the club was excited to welcome home Mundy in what was a huge boost.

“It’s an amazing signing for the club and we can’t wait to see Dave back at Kings Park where it all began,” he said.

“Dave is an incredibly humble person and has made clear for a while his desire to come back to Seymour and get back to country footy.

“Having one of the most experienced footballers in the history of the game trotting around in the GVL is going to be a great boost for our club and the competition more broadly.

“We saw when he hung up the boots there was still plenty left in the tank. There’s no doubt he’ll be giving a few opposition coaches headaches in 2024.”

Mr O’Sullivan said Mundy would fit into a strong midfield ready to go deep in September.

“We’ve got a great young side with plenty of room to improve after a bit of a disappointing finals series last year,” he said.

“Mundy will slide into our midfield nicely and will no doubt be passing on some important lessons to our boys.

“We’ve got some young players who already have VFL experience and it will be huge for their development to play alongside a legend of the game.

“There’s a really strong bond in our current team and an exciting vibe around the club. I’d encourage everyone to get around the Lions in 2024 in what will be a huge year for us.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Dave, Sally and his family to the club. They’re top quality people and it’ll be great to have them around.”
