The Wallan community, along with its neighbouring areas, now has the opportunity to participate in shaping the future of Wallan’s Wellington Square Shopping Centre.

A comprehensive survey was launched earlier this month, and centre staff are inviting residents to share their insights, ideas and preferences for a proposed expansion.

The survey will remain open for people to have their say until January 7, 2024.

Centre manager Janene Poynton said the aim of the survey was to understand the wants, needs and expectations of the community regarding their local shopping centre.

“The transformation of the centre goes beyond aesthetics; it’s a rare opportunity for a comprehensive, community-led expansion,” she said.

“Our vision is to craft a facility that transcends being just a shopping centre — we want to create a thriving local hub that adapts and caters to the evolving needs of Wallan’s growing population.”

Initial proposals envision the transformation of Wellington Square Shopping Centre into a larger, modern, and fully-enclosed hub.

Projected census data forecasts Wallan’s population to exceed 50,500 by 2041, underlining the significance of creating a space that can cater to the evolving needs of a growing community.

Centre management plans for expansion works to start by the first quarter of 2026, with an anticipated completion around the first quarter of 2028.

“This exciting project marks a significant step towards realising a revitalised shopping centre that resonates with the essence and demands of the thriving Wallan community,” Ms Poynton said.

People who complete the survey before Christmas will be automatically entered into a draw for the chance to win one of four $100 shopping vouchers.
