WHITTLESEA Agricultural Society welcomes everyone to the society’s open day on March 27 as it hopes to recruit new eager volunteers.
A not-for profit organisation, Whittlesea Agricultural Society relies on the generosity of volunteers to organise events and social gatherings throughout the year, including the Whittlesea Show.
Whittlesea Agricultural Society president Erica Hawke said the society looked forward to welcoming people to the open day to inform them about the society and the numerous volunteer opportunities.
“Volunteering is a fun way to meet new people, promote change and be a part of a community,” she said.
“We haven’t been able to hold a show since COVID-10 or put out a call to come back.
“Like other volunteer groups, we’re finding that numbers are dropping but it’ll be wonderful to have new people join us who are keen to be a part of the society.
“There isn’t a requirement on the amount of hours you put in, if you can only do two hours a month or help out at the Whittlesea Show, then that’s okay. It’s not a hard slog at all.”
Volunteer opportunities with the society include heritage, art and photography, animal nursey, attractions, poultry, sheep, horses, education, woodchopping, farm and gardening, and more.
Whittlesea Agricultural Society, through the Whittlesea Show, also provides assistance to community groups and organisations in Whittlesea and surrounding areas.
Ms Hawke said there were at least 40 groups and organisations the society had assisted, and it looked forward to being able to do so again, post pandemic.
“Not having the opportunity the last couple of years to help these groups has been really disappointing,” she said.
“We work throughout the year, commencing in February and March and help maintain the show grounds, get stall ready for the Whittlesea Show.
“Our land at the back of the showgrounds is also home of Pony Club Whittlesea, Whittlesea Poultry Club and Northern Model Aviation Group … and we partner with community groups like the Rotary Club.”
The Whittlesea Agricultural Society open day will be from 12pm to 2.30pm on March 27 at the society’s administration building, 1 McPhees Road, Whittlesea.
