New forest takes root

A LANDMARK reforestation project is underway at Mount Macedon with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA)to restore native forests to former pine plantation sites.

The project received $1.13 million in funding through Victoriaโ€™s BushBank program, which saw the planting of over 22,000 native tree saplings during winter across the 94-hectare site on the south-east side of Mount Macedon.

โ€œThe Mount Macedon Plantation Restoration Project is a huge win for our region and its communities,โ€ Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, said.

โ€œThe BushBank program is restoring natural environments across Victoria and right here in Macedon, helping to stop the decline in our native plants and animals and improve our natural environment.โ€

Seeds from native local trees were collected from the Macedon Regional Park in July 2023 to ensure the new forest was established with local progeny.

The seeds were collected, cared for, and grown into healthy saplings by a local nursery, ready for planting.

Monitoring sites were created across the project area to observe the impacts of browsing animals. Protective fencing was installed in March 2025. Drone-based weed mapping and spraying took place in spring to prepare the ground for planting.

Minister for Environment, Steve Dimopoulos, said the forest would provide several benefits to the community and the environment.

โ€œThe restoration of this forest will create even more green spaces for the community to enjoy,โ€ he said.

โ€œNot only will the renewed forest be a place for people to come and enjoy, but it will also provide more habitat for native species and contribute to climate change resilience.โ€

The forest will significantly increase habitat for native wildlife, improve soil health and water quality.

The $77 million BushBank program funds projects across Victoria that aid in revegetating land to reduce carbon emissions and create habitats for Victoriaโ€™s most iconic species.

Pyalong dominant in third round

THE Seymour District Cricket Association saw just one result across the A grade competition, with rain lashing the area.

Tallarook looked the goods against Alexandra before rain stopped play at Leckie Park.

Behind Lachlan Wattsโ€™ 86, Leigh Irvingโ€™s 49 and Joshua Rudgeโ€™s 42, Tallarook took advantage of what looked to be a good batting wicket to make 4/194.

Alexandra started well to be 0/23 off 6.2 overs before rain stopped play.

Puckapunyal had a difficult task against Yea, with Yea making 6/205 at Yea Recreation Reserve.

The crew from Puckapunyal had no answer to Yeaโ€™s Cameron Armstrong, who made 61, but Ciaran Fountain and Nicholas Bennetts took two wickets apiece.

Chasing 206, Puckapunyal struggled, with Charles Davies top scoring with 22 before rain stopped play.

Pyalong was guided by new recruit Steven Mitchell to cut a swathe through Avenel, winning by nine wickets.

Mitchell took 5/9 off nine overs to leave Avenel in all sorts at 8/25 before late hitting saw Pyalong requiring 69 to chase.

Dermott Clancy did the rest, top scoring with 27 to help Pyalong claim its second win of the year, moving up to third in the process.

B grade saw three lopsided matches.

Tallarook needed just 40 runs to defeat Alexandra, who were bowled out for 38. Tarkyn Dundon took 3/9, while Braeden Dundon (2/5) and Ben Trezise (2/7) also bowled consistently.

Puckapunyal defeated a short-handed Yea by nine wickets.

Yea could only muster seven players as it was all out for 41, with Peter Brennan taking 2/13, before Puckapunyal chased down the target easily, 1/45 off just 7.4 overs.

Meantime, at Avenel, Daniel Sowdenโ€™s dominant 94 was the best score of the round, helping Pyalong get to 4/229.

Jaxon Hill then claimed 3/22, with Tyler Caddie claiming 2/6 and Damien Zoch 2/9 as Pyalong easily bowled Avenel out for 53.

There will be a break in proceedings this week as the Melbourne Cup public holiday stops play for the week, before the competition reconvenes on November 8.
