WORKS are continuing on the Northern Highway Intersection Upgrade, with Wallan residents a step closer to safer journeys.
Crews are building the new section of road on the eastern side of Northern Highway, with works including drainage, underground utilities and shared path connections.
The upgrade will add lanes at the Northern Highway intersection, a second right-turn lane from Watson Street into Wallan, and improved signage, lighting and walking and cycling connections.
Watson Street between Northern Highway/High Street and Windham Street has been closed from Friday, September 18 to 5.30am on Monday, October 5. There will also be nightly closures of this section of Watson Street from Monday, October 5 to Thursday, October 8, 7pm to 5.30am each night.
Drivers will detour via Queen, Duke and Windham streets, with delays of up to 20 minutes.
The Hadfield Park car park and southbound bus stop on Northern Highway/High Street is closed until Monday, October 5.
When using public transport, locals are asked to allow extra time and plan their journey by checking the PTV website or app before they travel.
Short-term lane closures and traffic delays of up to 10 minutes are expected on Northern Highway/High Street, continuing at times through until late 2026 as works ramp up.
Local shops and businesses will stay open throughout construction.
The project complements the Watson Street Interchange Upgrade, which will complete the diamond interchange and add two new ramps — together supporting more than 30,000 daily journeys in and around Wallan.
The upgrades are jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments and are expected to create more than 1100 jobs during construction, providing a significant boost to the local and regional economy.
The Northern Highway Intersection Upgrade is on track to be completed by mid-2027.
Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell said spring will help fast-track works.
“The brighter days of spring are helping deliver our intersection sooner and better connectivity for us all,” he said.
State Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage said Wallan locals can expect a better town when works are completed.
“This disruption will be hard for Wallan locals, but it gets us to a completed intersection sooner,” she said.
