THE Victorian Country Press Association (VCPA) is continuing to work with government to secure a commitment of earning at least one page a week of government advertising for newspapers.
Last Wednesday, VCPA members attended a regional media forum hosted by Victorian Opposition leader Jess Wilson and Nationals leader Danny O’Brien. The North Central Review journalist Michael Thompson attended the event at Parliament House.
It was confirmed at the event that, if elected, the coalition would continue the current commitment of an average one-page-a-week of government advertising.
The VCPA confirmed that they are continuing to lobby the current State Government to confirm a bipartisan agreement regardless of the result of the upcoming election.
VCPA Executive Officer Peter Kennedy said in an email to all member newspapers it was a great result for regional newspapers, while also confirming Premier Ben Carroll will be attending the VCPA conference in November.
“This is a wonderful acknowledgement of the important work and service your papers provide in thousands of communities across the state, and it also recognises the role local papers play in our shared democracy,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone who has helped lobby in any way shape or form in support of the commitment’s continuation, and to those board members, publishers, editors and other staff who attended the forum at Parliament House.
“The VCPA continues to lobby the current government for its ongoing support of the advertising commitment, and we are seeking a meeting with the government to ascertain their position ahead of the election.
“So far, Premier Ben Carroll has confirmed his attendance at the Friday, November 13 conference where he will officially open the event.”
