Leading the way at local schools

STUDENT leaders across the Mitchell Shire are stepping into 2026 with pride, purpose and a clear message that leadership is about service, growth and bringing school communities together.

At Broadford Secondary College, School Captain Ava Collins said:

“I was so excited to be chosen as school captain, as I never saw myself going for it because I didn’t think I had it in me. So I think it’s a good push for everybody to try and do it.”

Her fellow captain Abby Miller said: “I’m really passionate about engagement and having a go at everything.”

That drive to step up is echoed across year levels. Vice Captains Ella Rodgers and Cruz Robinson hope to be role models for younger students, aiming to reflect the leadership they once looked up to.

Middle School Captain Elaina Harrison is advocating strongly for student wellbeing in the lead-up to VCE.

“Our mental health is just as important,” she said, noting the pressures that can build during senior years. “My main goal is to just help students.”

Co-captain Phoebie McDonald wants to see more students involved in sport, productions and whole-school activities.

She said: “I think it’s really important to have a strong community, it’s something you can lean on if you really need the help.”

For junior School Captain Logan Patford, leadership comes down to empathy and example.

“I want to help people,” he said. “I want to be seen as someone the Year 7s can look up to.”

The following students will lead their respective school communities across the Mitchell Shire in 2026:

Seymour College is Mitchell Shire Council’s only Foundation to Year 12 campus and it announced that Paige Cooper and Owen Brown are its college captains. Special Ed College Captains are Jacinta Swan and Luke Dreier and the Vice Captains are Oisin O’Sullivan and Jordan Murphy.

Assumption College Kilmore has named Olivia Kelly and Jack Wunderlich as the College Captains. Olivia Hill and Tess Munari are the Mission Captains and Amelia Rowston and Jonah Korsten are the boarding Captains.

As schools across the Mitchell Shire begin the new year, their student leaders are united in a common goal – to inspire confidence, strengthen connections, and ensure every student feels they belong.
