ODERN Rachelle met his musical heroes at St Kilda when the Comeback Kid performed for fans in Melbourne earlier this month.
Odern, 13 has earnt the nickname, the Comeback kid, since overcoming extraordinary adversity and challenges related to mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS).
MELAS is a congenital disorder, with no known cure, and usually it appears in childhood or young adulthood. It impacts the brain and also results in lactic acid buildup which affects kidneys and liver.
Michael, who provides care for his son, said: “The Comeback Kid is so important to us. It’s how Odern learnt how to talk again after multiple strokes, it’s thanks to their songs.
“It was so special for Odern to meet his idols; such an amazing, friendly band … they gave him guitar picks and drum sticks and had him on the side of the stage during the concert,” Michael said.
“The Royal Children’s Hospital rehabilitation department urged us to play their music to jolt memories of words that he was familiar with. Odern has been stroke free since March 2025.
“MELAS is like a commando course that never stops. It’s filled with obstacles, hurdles, mud and love. Parents and families reach levels of spiritual persistence they never knew they had. Odern’s journey is a testament to the care, quality and love the local schools have in achieving the best outcome for students no matter who you are.”
