GROWING communities in four regional towns – Donnybrook, Wallan, Kalkallo and Craigieburn – have welcome additions with the opening of four new government schools.

In Wallan East, Muyan Primary School last week welcomed Prep to Year 6 students, with room for up to 525 children. The new school includes learning neighbourhoods, specialist spaces for art, science and food technology, a community hub, hard courts, a sports field and an on-site kindergarten.

In Kalkallo, Ngayuk College welcomed its first Year 7 students, growing year by year into a full secondary school for up to 800 students. The campus features modern classrooms, creative and science spaces, outdoor learning areas, and flexible learning zones, with a sports field and community hub to follow.

Also opening in Kalkallo is Marra Specialist School, supporting up to 148 students with mild to profound intellectual disability from Prep to Year 12, with tailored learning spaces, therapy-friendly facilities and outdoor play areas designed to support students’ wellbeing and learning.

In Craigieburn, Gamadji Primary School welcomed its first young learners, with space for up to 650 in future years.

State Member for Kalkallo Ros Spence said: “Opening these new schools is a huge win for families in our community. It means shorter travel times, less pressure on existing schools and more opportunities for every child to learn in a supportive environment.

“From specialist spaces at Marra, to the modern classrooms at Ngayuk College and the fantastic facilities at Gamadji Primary School, these schools will give students the strong start they deserve.”

Wandong Primary School students are also benefiting from new buildings this year, with modern classrooms hosting Foundation students. The full upgrade will deliver a Specialist Learning Centre and improved toilets and administration spaces.

State Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage said: “Our new primary school in Wallan East, and its fantastic teachers and staff, will mean kids get a top notch education. New kinders on school sites help to tackle the double drop-off, and make the school run simpler for families who are short on time.”

Meanwhile, the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund has returned for 2026, with increased payments to help ease pressure on household budgets.

The fund supports students to take part in important school activities.

This year, eligible students in both government and non-government schools will receive $400 per child.
