WITH under a month to go in the season, Saturday’s round of bowls was played under a scorching sun and at Broadford the game was called off as players sweltered in the heat of the Highlands competition Mental Health Awareness Round.

KILMORE’S WAY: Kilmore lead Mavis Haynes calls it a win for her team early in the day at the division two round against Gisborne at the Kilmore Bowling Club on Saturday.
In division one, Kilmore played away at Lancefield and also moved into fourth place on the ladder since its teams two (17-18) and three (16-17) defeated their opponents. Team one had a narrow victory for Lancefield, 21-20.
Across the divide, Woodend hosted and defeated Broadford’s team two (26-15) and three (19-18). However, team one won for Broadford 17-21. Broadford is in seventh place on the ladder.
Kyneton remains the team to beat as it defeated Romsey, 14-2 on Kyneton’s home turf, and overall, Kyneton Golf defeated Diggers Rest in their game at Diggers Rest, 16-0.
In division two, Gisborne finished the round on top of the ladder following a hot game at Kilmore.

TOO HOT: Gisborne team two claimed victory against Broadford before the game was called off due to heat at the Broadford Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon.
Overall, the visitors claimed victory, 14-2 and at Broadford, Diggers Rest might have won the day had the game not been called off due to heat, leaving Broadford at the bottom of the ladder.
Broadford’s lead player William Fisher said: “[Diggers Rest] are a good club. The camaraderie is great. I like the greens at Diggers Rest [also].”
Kyneton hosted Romsey and were surprised by a loss, 12-4 while Kyneton Golf and Macedon played at Macedon and the home side won the day, 12-4.
Libby Taylor, who led Romsey Bowling Club team two, said Mental Health Awareness Round is sponsored by Bowls for Your Life. “There’s a Facebook page so you can read about it. It’s about making sure everyone is doing OK.”
“It’s important to me because I know a lot of people who do suffer [from mental health]. It can be very lonely out there and bowling clubs are a great way to have a social life and a purpose to get out of bed every morning,” Ms Taylor said.
“Everyone in a pennant team wears an awareness shirt [on this round].”
In division three, Kilmore was defeated by Romsey, overall, 4-12. Next week the club will travel to take on Mt Cottrell.
Kilmore is hosting Diggers Rest in divisions two and one and Broadford is hosting Gisborne in the division two game.
With three games to go in the pennant season, it’s reasonably clear it’s a friendly competition.
