IT was a historic day for Broadford in its first ever women’s cricket match on Sunday morning, hosting Lancefield Yellow at Harley Hammond Reserve.

While the result would be straight-forward for Lancefield Yellow, winning by nine wickets, it didn’t diminish the overall feeling of accomplishment that Broadford had finally got the chance to host women’s cricket.

In particular, Brooke Jeffery led from the front and fought hard to give Broadford a target, scoring 29 off 59 deliveries to ensure Broadford would make 75.

Melodie Bassett would have the honour of taking Broadford’s first ever wicket, luring Hayley Fisher into a shot straight to Jeffery, but it was Nat Jeffery who proved too strong for Lancefield Yellow, finishing unbeaten on 41 as the Tigers chased down the target in 10.3 overs.

Wallan have started the season like a house on fire after a stunning 165-run win over Melton Centrals.

The reliable opening-wicket partnership of Megan Farrell and Kia Montgomery combined well once again, with Farrell scoring 50 off 35 and Montgomery scoring 51 off 38 before being retired.

Kasey Lennox continued on the good work to score 40 off 27 deliveries, as Wallan finished on 1/193 off its 20 overs.

Farrell was also dominant with the ball, taking 3/6 off two overs as Wallan bowled Melton Centrals out for 28 from 11.2 overs.

Despite scoring just 14 runs off the bat, Kilmore has also won its opening game of the season, winning by seven wickets against East Sunbury.

Disciplined bowling was the story of the day for Kilmore, with Chloe D’Elia taking crucial middle order wickets to finish with 2/12 off three overs, while Wendy Smith, Abbie Smith and Taylah Logie also chipped in with wickets to hold East Sunbury to 6/71 off 20 overs.

Despite a slow start which saw Logie and D’Elia lose their wickets, East Sunbury was having significant trouble controlling its line and length, and Kilmore took advantage of it.

The result was that it would bowl 58 extras throughout the innings, contributing heavily to Kilmore’s 72 runs.

Rebecca Maycock led the way with eight runs, as Kilmore took its first win of the season by scoring 3/72.

This week, Kilmore will be hoping for a second win as it hosts Darley at LB Davern Reserve, while Lancefield Yellow host East Sunbury at Romsey Recreation Reserve.

Wallan and Broadford will do battle at Greenhill Reserve, while Lancefield Black will play its first game of the season as it hosts Macedon.
