THE Wallan Kilmore Homing Club enjoyed a strong day of racing on Saturday, October 4, as 244 pigeons took to the skies from Nathalia in challenging north-westerly winds.

Affiliated with the Victorian Racing Pigeon Union, the club’s latest race produced an exciting and close finish, with veteran flyer Charlie Grech claiming first place. Les Morris took second, while Anthony Cocks secured third.

The birds recorded a top speed of 1396 metres per minute, demonstrating both their stamina and the skill of their trainers in the blustery conditions.

The competition came right down to the wire, with Les Morris the first to clock his bird’s arrival. However, under racing pigeon handicap rules, distance plays a key role. As Grech’s loft was further from the release point, the time adjustment ultimately placed him ahead on the final results sheet.

Race organisers described it as “a good, honest race in testing winds,” with many competitors’ birds returning in tight groups, making for intense competition.

The Wallan Kilmore Homing Club continues to foster a strong community of enthusiasts, combining traditional training methods with modern timing technology to keep the sport thriving.

The Nathalia race is part of the club’s regular racing calendar, with more events scheduled in the coming weeks as the season progresses.
