THE Kilmore University of the Third Age (U3A) group invited the Wallan U3A members to celebrate Seniors month with them at the JJ Clancy Reserve function rooms last Friday.

U3A is a community of people who are devoted to learning and the association supports its members by timetabling weekly courses or activities of interest, such as dancing and singing or learning another language to stimulate their minds and strengthen their bodies.

The Kilmore and District Inc. and the Wallan Inc. are just some of over 40,000 Victorian U3A members taking part in the Victorian Seniors Festival events across October, with the theme being to connect, create and celebrate. The clubs collaborated to recreate their popular extracurricular activity—morning tea, trivia and a good old fashioned Ukulele singalong, with over 55 members attending.

The trivia challenged the contestants knowledge on geography, history and nature and also their memories around song titles, artist and the decade of classic tunes from old times. Once the trivia hosts collated the final scores it was a very close finish, but table two won the snack-sized chocolates.

The ukulele group performed in between, and a chorus of members sung along to favourites including Morningtown Ride, All Over The World and Murrumbidgee Stars.

The ‘Uke’ group as they are known also performed their own version of Country Roads, replacing lyrics with some of Mitchell Shire’s well known land marks including Sydney Road, Mount Disappointment, and the flowing Goulburn River.

The event delivered more than entertainment, there was a delicious assortment of sweet and savoury homemade treats to devour, and these thoughtfully included a light gluten free sponge and a wonderfully dense, citrus and pecan cake.

U3A is a not-for-profit organisation, and membership is open to anyone who is retired or semi- retired from full time work.
