BROADFORD Secondary College students and their teachers had a blast last week with their annual Book Week activities held in the library.
Book an Adventure is the 2025 theme and at their dress up day, astronauts, safari animals, dinosaurs, unicorns and even Banana’s in Pyjamas were in vogue.
The school’s very special support dog, a spotted greyhound, Angelo also joined in the fun, accompanied by Cruella De Ville, also known as Mrs Kohler.
Later on there was a photo booth for students to use and also a karaoke station.
Leading up to the grand finale, the teachers scheduled games and activities into recess and lunch times.
The outdoor scavenger hunt this year featured ‘find the book title.’
There were crazy indoor games including Jenga, Twister, Connect Four and a hilarious version of bullseye with rubber chickens as the darts.
A brand-new experience for some, and a new adventure for others, was the ‘escape room’.
The nearest official escape room venue is in Melbourne but thanks to a cohort of year 12 students with big imaginations they brought the opportunity to their peers.
With a little help from librarians Michelle Slater and Raelene Milvain, their escape room ‘set’ was decorated with streamers, balloons and even a skeleton prop. It featured puzzles and riddles and physical challenges which teams of willing students would need to do together in order to get out, and whats so exciting, is that there is a time limit.
“They used their creativity, research and critical thinking skills to create the adventure,” Ms Slater said.
“Then they tested it on a cohort of students in our RESET program [a flexible learning option for students aged 15 -18 years].
“Those students gave feedback which helped all the students have a better experience.
“They had to make the room shorter, and they adjusted it on the fly. It says a lot about their trouble shooting skills.
“Seeing the teamwork students used to make it out, showed just how developed their lateral thinking is.
“They loved book week so much…some of the kids asked if we can do this every day.”
