Wallan Panthers have suffered a 17-point defeat in the hands of Mornington in the division two Big V competition at RB Robson Stadium on Sunday.
While neither side will feature in this year’s finals campaign, both had something to prove in their final two games of the 2025 season.
Mornington started off strong, taking a healthy 32-11 lead into quarter time.
Before the Panthers did what they could to reduce the lead going into half time trailing by 15 points, 41-56.
While Wallan held the momentum in the second quarter, Mornington snatched it right back in the third. The Panthers stayed right on the Breakers’ tails, and only lost the period by six points, but it was enough for the visitors to keep their lead into the final change.
The Panthers put their feet on the gas in the final, doing whatever they could steal a win, but ultimately, their 27-24 final period, with the Breakers securing a 102-85 victory.
Despite the results, Jon Bailey and Trent Cousins gave their all and scored well in the paint, with Bailey scoring 25 and Cousins scoring 21. Lincoln Stewart also supported with 11 points of his own.
It now places the Breakers above the Panthers on the ladder by just 0.10 per cent and pushes Wallan to last place.
The Panthers’ last match of the season sees them face Southern Peninsula at RB Robson Stadium on Saturday night at 8pm.
Wallan’s women had the bye and now prepare for their final game this weekend too on Saturday night in a doubleheader at home at 6pm against Blackburn.
The result of the women’s game on Saturday night and possibly the result of Gippsland United vs Southern Peninsula will determine wither the Panthers finished second or third at the conclusion of the season, and ultimately, the side’s positioning as it heads into finals.
