HUNDREDS of volunteers were recognised across Mitchell Shire for National Volunteer Week.

It is a week that highlights the importance of volunteering and invites people not currently volunteering to give it a go.

Volunteers at the Rotary recycle op shop in Kilmore make a heartfelt difference in the day-to-day lives of many people.

Last month, manager Lisa Walker invited the crew to a free afternoon tea complete with tasty Subway subs and hot chips.

Not only is the op shop open six days a week for people on a tight budget to purchase clothing, books, and household items—altruistically the profits go towards community programs that support those in need.

Last year, Rotary introduced Wednesday Washday in Wallan. Once a week, anyone who needs to use the coin laundry at 69-79 High Street can do so for free and it’s all thanks to ‘Laundry Day, sorting out life one day at a time.’ The random acts of kindness have continued to help anyone burdened by the cost of living.

Across Southern Mitchell, Rotary also champions environmental causes, the arts, and healthy lifestyles for all ages – emotionally and physically.

The community is at the heart of everything they do. In Broadford, the Rotarians host an annual Australia Day festival and in Kilmore, they introduced the Regional Busking Championships. Their volunteers collaborate with the Kilmore Art Society to run its annual Art Expo on the same weekend (in April).

Rotary is one of the strongest volunteer organisations in the world. Rotary started with the vision of Paul Harris, and he formed the Rotary Club of Chicago 120 years ago in 1905. Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service, and always, not just at National Volunteer Week, their efforts do not go unnoticed.

In Victoria alone, thousands of volunteers are embraced by the not-for-profit organisation because, without them, rotary could not shine a positive light on so many every day challenges people face.

Volunteers are always welcome. To learn more, visit the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell on Facebook.
