WALLAN Senior Citizens held a free high tea lunch last Wednesday, with new office bearers organising the post Mother’s Day celebration at the Wallan Neighbourhood House.
Over 30 ladies attended the gala event to dine on delicious bite size treats usually reserved for special occasions.
The guests were seated at formal dinner tables decorated with flowers and each special lady was presented with a handmade lollie bag to take home. Of course, hot drinks were served in fine china teacups.
Many community groups utilise the space for community driven programs and events, but no one brings the wow factor to Mother’s Day quite like the Wallan Senior Citizens club.
Recently, at their annual general meeting, office bearers were elected to oversee activities and the organisation of their 30 members.
Sylvia Kelton was re-elected as president for the second time.
Vice president, Mary Carboon was excited to join the committee.
“We meet every Wednesday from 12.30pm,” she said.
“We have a lot of fun, and food. We play bingo, indoor bowls and tri-ominos [a tabletop game of strategy]. We arrange token prizes for the winners.
“We are a welcoming and fun group, and we are considering organising outings into the city for a matinee. But we’ll need a grant.
“The Wallan Kilmore Community Bendigo Bank donated $500 last year which we used to host the Christmas party, and it was wonderful! There was a local guitarist, and he encouraged us to get up and dance.”
In other committee roles, Jeannine Preece volunteered to become the madam secretary, and Rhondda Challenger agreed to function as club treasurer.
The senior citizens meet at the Wallan Multi-Purpose Community Centre at 42 Bentinck Street and warmly invite new members to join.
