NEW YEAR forecasts renewal and prosperity and for Mitchell Shires’ vibrant Sri Lankan community the occasion is celebrated in April.

Under sunny skies, a crowd gathered at Parkside Mandalay in Beveridge last Saturday and began their celebration with a jam-packed breakfast featuring traditional sweets and savoury dishes, but not before the boiling of the milk—the ceremony symbolises good fortune, prosperity, peace, and joy.

Special guests, Mitchell Shire Cr Timothy Hanson and Claudia James joined in with the fourth successful New Year event.
“This is a fantastic invitation. The colours, the sense of community, and it is a wonderful opportunity to taste new flavours. And we’re looking forward to the games,” they said.

The game’s schedule challenged all ages and genders and tested their luck and endurance throughout the entire day.

Traditional games included a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Aveen won spotting the Eye on the Elephant, and in Musical chairs, Faith won the U10 age group. Binol won the U18 game, and Yamini quickly won the lady’s round. Janaka Vithnage won the men’s game, and later a generous raffle hamper. A prosperous year ahead indeed.

President, Panchani also known as Sali, said the celebration is possible thanks to financial sponsorship from Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell, and the Bendigo Community Bank Wallan and District.

“We also have a Bunnings BBQ. A special thank you to the committee members and their families. And also these local businesses; M R Finance Solutions, Radiant Facility Services Pty Ltd, and Flemingo Financial Services,” she said

Another special guest was Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles.

The Sri Lankan community is one of the vibrant multicultural communities in the Mitchell Shire.
