KILMORE trainer Alicia McPherson crossed the border on Saturday to score a win at Corowa with Gulf of Finland. It was the six-year-old gelding’s second win at Corowa, having broken his maiden at the track in December 2023.
Starting from a wide barrier, apprentice Sage Duric took the horse to an early lead in the 900-metre event, eventually winning comfortably by a length.
A trip over the Great Divide to the annual picnic meeting at Hinnomunjie proved worthwhile for Seymour trainer Don Dwyer, scoring a win with the six-year-old Nostradamus gelding Cesar Bessan. Dropping back to 1000 metres proved the key, with the gelding clearing away at the turn to win comfortably by four lengths.
The win gave champion picnic jockey Shaun Cooper one of two wins for the day, the other being on the Geoff Brunsdon trained Persuasive Star.
The Seymour trained mare Lady Jones made her comeback from a spell with an encouraging third placing in the Group 3 Furphy Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap over 1400 metres at Flemington on Saturday.
Trained by Stephen Brown, the mare won the Group 3 Tesio Stakes over 2040 at Moonee Valley on 26 October 2024.
The five-year-old by Toronado took her stakes earnings to $695,025 for her owners.
