WHITTLESEA’S Public Gardens Skate Park is now open.

Known as the ‘urban zone’, the skate park was declared officially open at a celebratory event held late last month.

Attendees were treated to a range of activities on offer, including roller skating lessons from tutors at Malt Shop Rollers, lawn games, basketball activities, and food trucks, while entertainment was provided by a local DJ.

Located on Barry Road, the park has been the heart of Lalor and Thomastown for decades, and underwent the first of a three-stage redevelopment in 2022 to better reflect the current and future recreation needs of residents.

The completion of the first stage saw a new playground, equipped with a large play tower, double flying fox, rope climbing unit, swings, slides, in-ground trampolines, rockers, nature play and more installed at the park.

The second, and most recent, saw a 100-metre-long street-style skate park installed, alongside two half-court basketball courts, a rock-climbing wall, and a kick-about space with soccer goals.

Additional amenities were also installed, including two large shelters with barbecues, seating, drinking fountains, paths, and lighting and landscaping.

Stage three will focus on the wetlands and walking trails of the park by increasing native vegetation, rockwork, and boardwalks to enhance the Native Grassed conservation zone to the northwest corner of the reserve.

The works will also provide a continued network of pedestrian and cyclist paths with lighting throughout, with additional installations to include natural water play elements around the wetlands and outdoor fitness equipment, while the redundant lake will be repurposed into an irrigated events lawn.
