Last Thursday, children at the Seymour Family and Children’s Centre celebrated Children’s Week with an afternoon of music and gardening that delighted them all.

The theme was keeping our air clean. FamilyCare along with The Bridge Youth Service facilitated two activities during their regular kindergarten program to capture the children’s imaginations, stimulate their senses, and encourage creative expression.

The children clapped along to their indoor concert performed by entertainer Warren Smith and The Animals of the Magical Mountains. The lyrics from ‘Wozza’ and movements from the larger than life, Stewie the Koala and Brianna the Gum Tree, inspired the children to appreciate clean air, shade, and most importantly, the cycle of peace and harmony between the food source for native animals.

Next, the children decorated pots pre planted with an assortment of seasonal annuals. Bunning’s warehouse donated the colourful range of poppies and marigolds. Mindfully, the children decorated their pot plant with stickers and sparkles to take home and grow.

The children also received their very own Clean Air and Safe Environment Ambassador 2024 Certificate for participation. FamilyCare Senior Practitoner, Goulburn Regional Parenting Services Coordinator Rowena Exell said the event was made possible with funding from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH).

“The Victorian Government fund Children’s week every year. We also get some sponsorship through the Childhood Family Services Alliance, which is Familycare, AusChild, The Bridge Youth Service,  and the Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative,” she said.

“This year is great because we were able to get “Wozza’ and the Animals of the Magical Mountains to perform with Stewie Koala and Brianna the Gum Tree. Brianna the Gumtree, she is all about safe environments and clean air, and she provides shade, shelter, peace and harmony. Stewie Koala, he is part of the eco system, and he makes the tree grow, and the tree makes Stewie grow.”

FamilyCare programs assist communities in regional local government areas, including Mitchell Shire, Murrindindi Shire, and Strathbogie Shire with their range of services that help families and individuals with parenting.

The Seymour Family and Children’s centre truly is a hub for children, youth and family. Along with an Early Years Education program, The Mitchell Shire Council Maternal and Child Health Centre is on-site. There is also a free community library of children’s books, and a community pantry, wardrobe and notice board.
