With over eight million apps available worldwide, it can be tricky to know which ones are worth downloading, particularly when it comes to safety and emergency preparedness.
But in the digital age, the information at your fingertips should be easy to use, understand, and share with others, and VicEmergency and EmergencyPlus are two such apps that every Victorian should have downloaded on their phone—and bonus, both are free!
VicEmergency provides users with a real-time map display of incidents across the state. A ‘Watch zone’ can be created to provide users with information about incidents and warnings in a set area too, and different alert types can be turned on and off.
EmergencyPlus uses GPS functionality built into smart phones to help Triple Zero (000) callers provide emergency services with their exact location. The app provides users with their address, latitude, longitude, and a ‘what3words’ code—a system that has given every three metres on Earth a unique, three-word identifier. ‘what3words’ works offline too, so the feature can even be used in remote areas with poor data connection.

Both apps are available for download on Google Play and the App Store.
