Nominate a local champion in the Mitchell Shire

Mitchell Shire Council is requesting nominations for the 2025 Community Awards and the Mitchell Youth Awards.

The Community Awards, presented on Australia Day at The Island Reserve in Broadford, is an opportunity for locals to nominate individuals or groups who have made community contributions.

Mitchell Shire Council Chief Executive Brett Luxford recognised the importance of acknowledging those who make the shire a great place to live.

“Our local champions often go unnoticed for their significant contributions,” he said.

“This awards program is an excellent occasion to express our appreciation to both individuals and groups and to recognise their incredible efforts.”

Nominations are open in the following categories:

Citizen of the Year: For individuals aged 25 and over who have made significant contributions during the current year or over several years.

Young Citizen of the Year: For individuals aged 25 or under who have contributed during the current year or over several years.

Community Event of the Year: For community organisations or groups who have staged a noteworthy event in the past year.

Community Group of the Year: For groups who have provided exceptional service to the community over the current year or multiple years.

Access and Inclusion: Recognises efforts to improve access and inclusion for people with disabilities within the shire.

Sports Person of the Year: For individuals who have significantly impacted the development and professionalism of sport in the community.

Arts Person of the Year: For those who have shown commitment and achievement in the arts and culture.

Nominations close at 9am on November 11.

Council is also seeking nominations for the Mitchell Youth Awards which closes on November 4.

These awards recognise the great contributions of young individuals aged 12–24 who have made a significant impact within the shire.

The Youth Awards will include nominations that demonstrate community impact, leadership, innovation, sustainability, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and carers support.

Mr Luxford emphasised the importance of noticing young leaders.

“Our youth are the future of Mitchell Shire, and it’s vital to celebrate their creativity, leadership, and dedication to making our community a better place,” he said.

“These awards are an opportunity to highlight the incredible work that young people are doing in our community. From leading initiatives to creating lasting change, our youth are truly making a difference, and it’s important that we recognise and support their efforts.”

The awards will be presented at the Twilight Music Festival on November 22 in Wallan.
