Lyn Gunter connected with over 50 attendees at Broadford’s Biggest Morning Tea last Thursday when she shared her cancer survival story alongside fellow survivor Vao Matautia, with the event raising $942.55 for the Cancer Council.

A week later, Lyn caught up with a smaller crowd of eight people for their first ‘Hot Drinks Thursdays’.

The new initiative is funded by the Broadford Adventist Church, who will help by paying for all attendees’ first hot drink during June.

The next gathering is at the Broadford Bazaar Café on Thursday, June 20, 10.30am to 12pm. From there, the group will rotate weekly between local cafe venues until spring.

Ms Gunter said cafés were the best fit for the group, as there’s plenty of indoor seating, warmth, and table service. As a bonus, local businesses will benefit from the patronage.

“We’ve had comments from people to say they used to be able to come into town and have a coffee, but they can’t afford it anymore,” she said.

“It’s a free coffee, and you can come and catch up with your friends.”

Promotion for ‘Hot Drinks Thursdays’ is by old-school word of mouth and posters in shop front windows. All are welcome and bookings are not necessary.
