Wallan families were rocked by the sudden announcement of the closure of Killara Children’s Centre on Sunday, leaving many without a childcare service and staff out of a job.
Killara Children’s Centre was a not-for-profit, community-run child day care centre that served the community for more than 30 years.
As Killara leased its current site in Bentinck Street from Mitchell Shire Council, the neighbouring council-operated Wallan Kindergarten is not affected by the closure.
Council held a community meeting last night for those affected by the centre’s closure to come together and find out more about the next steps and options for childcare in Wallan.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Bill Chisholm said council was saddened to hear of the centre’s closure.
“We recognise the huge impact this will have on staff, families and children who use the centre,” he said.
“Council owns the building and will work with the administrators to hopefully secure an alternative provider in the short term.
“Council is also keen to explore options for the longer term so families and carers in Wallan can continue to access the services they need, particularly those who rely on the centre to get their children to and from the council-run kindergarten which operates next door.”
