Eight is great for Laurimar

By Jackson Russell

Laurimar extended its undefeated streak to 8-0 with a 58-point win over Heidelberg West at home on Saturday.

The Power are three games clear on top of the Northern Football Netball League division three ladder, ahead of Panton Hill and Kilmore.

A tight contest early had Heidelberg West lead by two points at quarter time as both sides kicked a goal apiece.

Scoring opened up in the second term as Laurimar kicked 4.3.27 to 2.1.13 to take a two goal lead into half-time.

A hard-fought third term saw Laurimar and Heidelberg West kick just one goal each as the Power held onto a 16-point lead at three-quarter time.

The Power showed why they’re undefeated and leading the league, booting seven unanswered goals in the final term to run away with the win.

Laurimar coach Justin Sherman said the game was won in the second half.

“We were tested in the first but kicked seven goals to zero in the last. We tried to finish the game off strong and we did that and everyone contributed really well on the day,” he said.

“We started to win the ball around the contest and play the game in our half. We had the wind and most of the goals were scored down that end so we made sure we played in our half and set up well behind the footy.”

The Power have a long break ahead of them with the Queen’s Birthday weekend followed by a bye before taking travelling to South Morang on June 22.

“I think the bye’s come at a perfect time, it gives the boys a bit of rest and they’ll come ready for the back half of the year,” Sherman said.

“We’ve got a few sore bodies so it’s a chance to recover. We’re not looking too far ahead, we’ll just continue doing what we’re doing.”
