Infrastructure investment was included in this year’s Federal Budget, including Yan Yean Road Stage 2 under the Suburban Road Upgrades.

An additional $437.3 million was allocated for Suburban Road Upgrades – South Eastern Roads and Northern Roads, which includes the Australian Government’s share of funding for Yan Yean Road Stage 2.

The funding is additional to the $2.5 billion Suburban Roads Upgrade – jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments.

For years the project has been in its planning stage and is in need of its upgrade which involves widening Yan Yean Road between Kurrak Road, Yarrambat and Bridge Inn Road, Doreen.

The upgrade would build on benefits provided by Stage 1 to improve safety and traffic flow through Plenty, Yarrambat and Doreen.

In 2020, the project underwent an environment effects statement process, EES and was presented to the planning minister in February 2021.

As a result of the EES changes to the scope and proposed design of the project were required.

Major Road Projects Victoria is currently finalising the project design, obtaining environmental and planning approvals required and addressing the outcomes of the EES to ensure the best outcomes.

Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement.

“I welcome the Federal Government’s infrastructure investment in Victoria; this budget provides Victoria a much fairer share of Commonwealth funding than previous Liberal-National budgets,” she said.

“Extensive design revisions and planning work has been undertaken to get the second stage of the Yan Yean Road upgrade ready to move into delivery, so locals can get home faster, safer and with greater ease.”

Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell highlighted the importance of the road’s infrastructure.

“We know it’s a vital piece of infrastructure that people have been needing but working with the State Government and got to acknowledge [Member for Yan Yean] Lauren [Kathage’s] devotion to getting it done as well as Councillor Peter Perkins from Nillumbik Shire,” he said.

“We’ll be able to secure the finding with the Albanese Labor Government, we’re about making sure that we look after our communities and that’s where we’ll see money flowing into Yan Yean Road.”
