Mitchell Shire could potentially become a ‘dog on lead’ shire following a decision of Council at its April meeting to have council officers prepare a report on actions required to facilitate an order to ensure dogs are contained in public places.

Cr Annie Goble presented a Notice of Motion that asked for swift (If not immediate) order in accordance with Section 26 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994.

Cr Goble’s motion said that the order would allow Mitchell Shire to be a totally ‘dog on lead’ shire, excepting off lead dog parks and private properties owned by the dog owner or where permission has been granted by the owner of such property.

“This order would ensure all dogs were kept on leads. We have seen incidents that have occurred on a farm or something like that and there are also horse focussed issues I have seen in places like Monument Hill. I urge speed in adopting this order,” Cr Goble said.

Cr Chisholm said that as a farmer he did not like to see livestock getting injured.

“Dogs off lead in inappropriate places can bring lots of problems,” Cr Lowe added.

Cr Goble said that all legitimate dog owners have their dog registered and receive yearly renewal request for the registration. Adding that any education required for this change can be disseminated at time of registration renewal and also in all rate notice mail outs or emails.

The motion was put and carried unanimously.
