Junior girls scholarships open at Kilmore Golf Club

Popular Stories

Kilmore Golf Club has again obtained funding from the Australian Golf Foundation, AGF, to support up to eight girls to start playing or continue pursuing golf.

The scholarships are open to girls aged 10 to 16. The program’s primary aim is to retain girls who have started playing golf by giving them a shared experience, but is also open to girls who are new to the game.

Kilmore Golf Club had five juniors participate in the program in 2022, many of whom demonstrated expanded their experience by travelling to other golf clubs in the area like Northern and Hidden Valley and entering competitions.

AGF provides awards and certificates in recognition of the achievements of scholarship participants. Scholarship recipients are given a one-year junior membership at Kilmore Golf Club, as well as 24 one-hour tuition sessions with professional Nathan Roberts. They also receive a shirt and cap designating their scholarship status.

Kilmore Golf Club president Bea Lay said the scholarships were ‘a terrific opportunity’.

“Not only will the girls receive 24 coaching sessions with Nathan Roberts, but also a one-year junior club membership that carries playing rights to ensure girls can participate in club competitions and obtain a handicap,” she said.

Club members will also contribute by playing competitive rounds of golf with the scholarship holders, helping them to improve their skills.

The scholarship program is part of a national campaign to get more girls playing golf. Along with other golf facilities across Australia, Kilmore Golf Club will work closely with national body Golf Australia throughout the year.

“All we ask is that applicants display a desire and willingness to improve their golf skills, obtain a handicap, play in club competitions and engage in any extra-curricular activity that fosters friendships between scholarship holders,” Ms Lay said.

“We are aiming for a total of six scholarships at Kilmore Golf Club for 2023.”

Scholarship applications are required by December 7 for evaluation by 12 noon on December 12.

For further information and to apply, people can contact Nathan Roberts on 0405 327 427 or email nroberts@pgamember.org.au.
