Having moved from its old location at Skehan Place Kilmore, U3A Kilmore and District is now settling into its new home at 90 Sydney Street.
The group is welcoming community members over the age of 55 to join in one, or more, of the various activities run by the group.
Secretary Mark Perrott said that due to the Mitchell Shire’s need to grow the facilities at Skehan Place for kindergarten and the maternal childcare centre, U3A were asked to find a new location for the group.
He said space at the Kilmore Library was offered, but it wasn’t big enough to continue running the activities offered.
The group has now set up home in a building opposite KFC, formerly a fruit shop and many years ago a service station.
“So we had to look around to find an alternate space… the owner said ‘you’ve got to do a bit of work’, but we could see it coming good and we were thinking ‘this could work’,” he said.
“The old space could accommodate most of our sit down classes, but a couple of them were too big for that space.
“This space does it nicely, we looked up all the courses and other than the obvious ones like gardening and luncheon group, we’d be able to move just about everyone else in here.”
Some of the activities offered by U3A include trivia, quilting, gentle and chair exercise and writing classes.
Classes to happen externally from the new location also include theatre group and walking group.
All the activities run on a monthly cycle, with a calendar of what’s happening available both at the U3A venue and online at u3akilmoreanddistrict.com.au.
On average, classes have 15 members attend, and the group’s overall size is about 200 members.
Current members of U3A are mostly Kilmore and Broadford residents, as now Wallan also has a U3A of its own.
Members can be a part of both programs, with discounts on memberships available should individuals be interested in taking advantage of the classes in both groups.
Membership is open to anyone who has fully or semi-retired from full-time employment and is looking for ways to stay social and active.
