Evacuees hit by theft

By Evelyn Leckie

FIRE evacuees who left Mount Beauty to seek refuge in Broadford met another set of unfortunate circumstances when their bikes were stolen from their RV bike rack on January 5.

Greg Lee and his family evacuated from their home when bushfires came close to Mount Beauty, near Bright.

The Lee family travelled to Broadford in their RV to stay with Mr Lee’s parents while they awaited news of their home.

Sleeping in their RV overnight, the family awoke and noticed their two road bikes valued up to $4000 had been taken from the vehicle’s bike rack.

“They must have taken them very quietly,” Mr Lee said.

“We didn’t hear anything that night, the sleeping area in the RV is about 25 meters from the end of the vehicle where the bikes were stacked.”

“My sons and I were devastated, we brought the bikes with us because we thought our house may burn down.”

Luckily the Lee’s house wasn’t damaged in the fires, but the theft left the family disappointed.

“We arrived late at night on the 5th, it was around 11pm – the bikes weren’t locked up, but we’d never had trouble before,” Mr Lee said.

Mr Lee said the bikes were distinct and would be detected due to certain elements that can’t be disclosed.

If people have seen the two pictured bikes, or know any information that could assist police, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
